The Light Within

Each year, as millions of diyas flicker in homes across India, Diwali reminds us that light has always been humanity’s most powerful metaphor. It represents knowledge over ignorance, hope over despair and the triumph of good over evil. Yet, the real significance of Diwali is not in the light we see, but in the light we awaken within. The festival reminds us that illumination is an inner process, not an outer event. The lamps we light are reminders of the divine spark that resides within each of us, what the Upanishads call the “Jyotir Aham”, the eternal light of awareness.

Diwali is very much a festival of renewal. It celebrates not just the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after exile, but also the victory of truth and justice. It’s about closing one chapter and beginning another — a reminder that endings and beginnings are intertwined.

Another important message of Diwali is about seeking clarity amidst chaos. Just as we clean our homes and remove clutter every Diwali, we are invited to declutter our minds of doubt, fear and resentment. In a world that constantly competes for our attention, Diwali reminds us to pause and reconnect with ourselves. Diwali in some sense can be seen as the human journey itself. The story of Lord Rama returning home is the story of every seeker finding their way back to their true self. The celebration then becomes a metaphor for enlightenment; the realisation that the divine is not somewhere outside but burning within.

Perhaps the most important message of Diwali is also the simplest: light is contagious. A single diya may seem fragile, but one flame can spark a thousand more without losing its glow. In the same way, kindness, empathy and optimism spread silently but powerfully. When we choose to be light-bearers — through our words, our work and our presence — we spread goodness and light the path for others to follow.

As the lamps are lit this Diwali, may they remind us of the work yet to be done in our external and our inner worlds. May we not only celebrate the victory of light but become it. Because the true spirit of Diwali lies not in the fireworks outside, but in the quiet fire within.
